The Irvine Unified School District will sponsor “Ask-A-Scientist Night” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Rancho San Joaquin Middle School.

Students in grade six through 12 who are working on Science Fair projects will have an opportunity to ask questions and receive advice from practicing scientists and engineers from Beckman, Allergan, Rockwell, the Irvine Ranch Water District, UC Irvine, USC, Irvine Valley College, Chapman University and other local science-related institutions. In addition, district science teachers will be on hand to assist.

Students will also be able to purchase Science Fair backboards for $5 each.

Solar Technology for IUSD Schools

The IUSD Board of Education has approved a historic plan to place energy-generating solar panel systems at 16 district sites. Once the project is completed, it will be the largest solar deployment for a public school system in California, and possibly the United States.

The clean, silent renewable energy systems are anticipated to save the district $8 million in energy expenses over 20 years based on conservative estimates. In addition, this unique partnership with SunEdison and SPG Solar will make solar energy production part of the district’s curriculum.
